Statement of the Problem
It would be disingenuous
to state that no studies have been done on the career choice of students. For
instance, Arkorful et al (2021) looked at the perception students hold about
the career awareness among students in the Colleges of Education. In addition
to the above, Owusu (2020) looked at factors affecting career aspiration of
students in the second cycle institutions. Nyamwange et al (2021) also examined
perception of students on career guidance and counselling in making career
choices at public senior high schools. It appears that most of these studies
were contextualised in senior high schools. Interestingly, however, Owusu et al
(2023) looked at the mediating role of gender vis-à-vis career choice and
personality traits of university students in the Bono region, Ghana. As far as
I know, it appears that studies conducted on career counselling among
university students tend to focus on how personality traits and gender
influence career choice of students. Notwithstanding the fact that a few
studies have been done at the University level, such studies tend to focus on
the nexus between career choice and personality traits. Thus far, that earlier
studies have addressed career decision of students from different spatial
dimensions. What seems unclear in the
literature is how students perceive career decision pathways in enhancing
career development. This research would examine the PERCEPTION OF UNIVERSITY
STUDENTS ON CAREER DECISION PATHWAYS by contextualising the study at the
University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), which is perceived as an
emerging university in the Bono region.
